This design project focused on recreating three movie posters—Amelie, Matilda, and Moonrise Kingdom—into a minimalist design that captures the essence of the film, while also being creative, simple, and effective.
A limit of two colors within the poster design were the only parameters for this project.
A total of 100 sketches were created for each poster as a way to brainstorm ideas, and gain familiarity with creating a simplified design. For the film Amelie, spyglasses, photo booths, phone booths and gnomes are prominent icons throughout the plot, while the color red and exploring Paris are reoccurring themes. These elements are drafted together to create 100 different poster ideas, a few of which were taken into Adobe Illustrator to further explore.
The final minimalist design consists of a vintage suitcase with Eiffel Tower icons within the negative space, as well as a phone-shaped handle. A bright red was used as the sole color for this poster, along with a friendly sans-serif typeface.
Like the previous poster, 100 thumbnail sketches were created for the second movie poster, Matilda. And like Amelie, there are many whimsical, childish and magical elements within this film. The theme of books and literature, as well as Matilda’s iconic hair bow were the top contenders for this poster design. The final poster features a mix of the two—her hair bow meshed with an open book with the pages turning. A deep indigo was the solo color to represent Matilda, and the same typeface was used from the previous film.
There are many elements and iconic images from the film Moonrise Kingdom that were reflected in the 100 thumbnail sketches. Camping, record players, maps and adventures were the running themes throughout this creative process. The final design portrays the main character’s hat in the shape of a tent, along with sunglasses to reveal more of a facial shape. A bright yellow hue was used as the sole color for this film, as well as the consistent typeface from the previous two in this minimalist poster series.
