This was a collaborative team project to design two wine labels for Cal Poly Pomona’s winery, Horsehill Vineyards, for their 2020 Zinfandel red and rose wines. The final design is inspired by the geographical location of the university. My role in this project included map typography, booklet layouts, back label typography and napkin design.

Team members: Alejandra Arevalo, Hannah Cosanella, Xingzhen Huang, and Ian Lam
This map design, which was Alejandra’s original idea, was created to highlight several important landmarks at the university, using only text to define certain shapes. The words on the map, although not legible, identify specific important buildings such as the horse stables, rose garden, the Classroom/Laboratory/Administration (CLA) Building, and our own art department’s Building Thirteen. The map fills up the background of the label but still allows these elements to still be readable. If a viewer were to take a closer look, they would be able to make out the shapes and identify that it is a map of the school.
I also created the horizontal “freeway” line out of a line of text that provides key information on the wine. This yellow text leads your eye from the front of the label to the back of the label, which I also helped design. Hannah and I both collaborated on appropriate layout and placement of the back label text, and I put the freeway map text design next to that back label body copy. My contributions for the label also included adding and modifying certain map lines to fit alongside the front logomark.
I was also responsible for the napkin design, which is based on the original map that Alejandra had created.  We modified the map design slightly for the napkin, making the map wider and fuller, and thus filling up the negative space.
For the box design, I worked with Alejandra on finalizing the finishing touches of the box, adding the correct map, fixing different map-text lines, and then fitting the logo mark and all other type elements properly onto the box template.
All wine bottle images were photographed by myself and Alejandra, while the other collateral mockups were split between Ian and Kathy.
